The Cable Guy

Just a further comment on drones, there is a large park at the end of my street where RC aircraft are flown almost every weekend. A month or so back a guy was flying a large helicopter, about a 2 foot diameter rotor, he had on VR goggles linked in to the chopper, amazing bit of kit. I was waiting till he had the the chopper pointing away from himself, so I could sneak up behind him, and just stand there, till he noticed in the goggles that there was someone behind him, just to see the reaction.
Another guy had a really shitty looking plane, but it took off and flew around the park, across the river and back, then landed, all by pre-programmed, GPS controlled, flight plan. He's been testing for a few weeks, planning a trip in to Sydney Harbour, under the bridge and back again. He's basically making a small cruise missile.
And these are backyard hobbyists.
I have one of the little choppers, and I also have 2 cats, I was curious how they would react. They're not young any more, so they sat and watched, until I brought it in close. A 15 pound cat can easily smash one of these toys out of the air, but not break it straight away, at least. And they make such a distinctive noise, the cats will seek it out.
As a further point, they are controlled by an IR signal, they will cut out when the lose line of sight. The larger ones, which are still IR control, don't always have the cut out. A guy I work with had one of the bigger ones at work, as soon as he got it above the height of our building, the wind took it, we thought it was going to crash in a major intersection, it landed just short on top of our building, but only about 20 feet short after travelling 200.
