Today on the 5: I'm a little over a third of the way through Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods. So far, it's a good read, if not up to the levels of praise I usually read heaped on the book.

Today on the 5: There's nothing I see as a bigger indictment of the state of our democracy than the constant use of labels as a way to classify people. You see it everywhere, even from people who are otherwise fairly intelligent individuals. Rather than engage in real discussion or objective analysis, we end name calling and grouping people together under convenient umbrellas to prop up our viewpoints.

Today on the 5: I've been playing through the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption recently. As I've been playing I was reminded of an article I read around the time the game was released about killing the animals in the game. I was curious what my reaction to that aspect would be, and whether it's common to have your real world views on animals span over to a game.

Today on the 5: The new animated series Tron: Uprising premiered a few weeks ago, and I've been catching up on the episodes. There was a lot of question around how the series would handle being a prequel to the movie, and having seen it I think there's a lot of potential to add some narrative weight to the events in Legacy.

Today on the 5: The newest version of the MacBook Pro is going to be missing something previous versions had, the Ethernet port. While this is a small thing to remove, I wonder if it's a mistaken direction for Apple to move in.

Today on the 5: Several film sites are reporting that anywhere from 30-40 minutes of footage will be added to Prometheus for the DVD/Blu-Ray release. While I have no need to re-watch the theatrical cut again, I can't say that a longer 'extended cut' won't end up being a much better film.

Today on the 5: My wife and I recently spent some time in San Diego. One of the highlights of the trip was going to the San Diego Safari Park. While I don't like zoos, this was a much different, and ultimately better, experience.

Today on the 5: Apple is clearly backing the retina display in a big way. I wonder what that's going to mean once everyone starts jumping on board. There are some big implications that may come about once people start looking for content to exploit those beautiful pixels.

Today on the 5: Well, you see it time and again. A post about a new phone, and sure enough somewhere in the comments some moron claims the type of phone they prefer had this or that feature first. What does that do for anyone? Isn't whining about who had something first in tech just a way to give a company a pass on innovating?

Today on the 5: I've seen a lot of stuff around the web lately taking issue with skeptics on various topics. You can find vehement disputes of scientific tests that fail to find evidence of ghosts, UFOs, or psychics. My take on all this stuff is pretty simple; until I see something concrete, it's just a matter of people making up what they want to believe.

Today on the 5: It doesn't seem like many gadget or technology blogs can go 15 minutes without posting a leak of some kind, does it? I find it amusing, but I wonder what people get out of some of this news. If it's not a leak that gives you something tangible to test with or a completely new version of something out of left field, what do you get out of these leaks?

Today on the 5: Remember the good old days when it was Sega and Nintendo battling it our for console supremacy? Today it's Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, but I think before too long we'll be back down to only a pair of big rivals trying to take each other out.

Today on the 5: I've noticed that many blog posts that have a lot of good things to say also start to bury themselves under an avalanche of words. Not only does it diffuse the points, but it can lead to tangents that that end up undermining those points. I hope we avoid that problem on the show, and on my 5s.

Today on the 5: I took the time to watch the unveiling ceremony at the White House for the portrait of George W. Bush. As I watched the current and former Presidents and their wives speak, I felt a sadness about the whole thing. Can we believe anything that is said by those in power any more?

Today on the 5: The recent revelations of a covert power struggle within the Vatican strike me as revealing. How is it that such terrestrial concerns have made their way into an organization that is, in essence, guided by the divine? Doesn't a scandal of this type reveal the true face of the Vatican?
